The weekly supply of eggs is an important part of the foodbank’s fresh-food offer, alongside bread, milk, fruit and vegetables; a versatile and protein rich source of food. The provision of fresh food – dairy, fruit and vegetables is not usual for a foodbank – but the Gala Foodbank feels it is such an important part of our encouraging people to eat a healthy diet.
The donation also highlights the value of local partnership working as the foodbank has continued to adapt its services and distribution options so that it reaches people in ways that are dignified, accessible and responsive to local needs. Support from organisations such as Buccleuch strengthens that effort helping volunteers serve the wider community each week.
Liz at Galashiels and Area Foodbank welcomed the contribution, describing it as a simple but significant gift that will have an immediate impact. Such consistent donations of staple fresh items help the foodbank plan ahead and ensure support reaches those who need it most.
Foodbanks are being accessed increasingly across the UK and to help co-ordinate activities in Galashiels, Margaret has been recruited as Foodbank Coordinator, working to expand outreach and shared working with local businesses and charities.
The foodbank is encouraging local people to get involved; whether by volunteering their time or by reaching out if they need support. Anyone interested in helping, or anyone who may need to use the service, can find the latest opening hours and information on how to get in touch through the foodbank website or by emailing galashielsfoodbank@gmail.com.
