GSHP
In 2021, Buccleuch completed a pioneering renewable energy project at Bowhill House on the Borders Estate.
In partnership with borders-based company Renew Green Energy, we installed one of the largest ever ground source heat pumps (‘GSHP’) in Scotland, with a 24km pipe network laid in the grounds of the estate, connecting the GSHP to the 19th century mansion house.
Custom built by Danish firm European Energy, the bespoke heat pump provides wholly renewable energy for Bowhill House and surrounding buildings. Borders Estate is already home to an innovative anaerobic digester, which converts waste from the estate’s agricultural operations into electricity, and in turn supplies power for the GSHP.
Following a long tradition of environmental initiatives, this major project is hugely important to Buccleuch, as it represents a key milestone on the journey towards a target of net zero.
The annual CO2 savings for the GSHP is estimated to be 444 tonnes per annum, the equivalent of planting 1770 trees every year.
