Langholm Moor is almost certainly unique in the United Kingdom. It has been the location for two scientific projects, the last of which, the Langholm Moor Demonstration Project (LMDP), was completed two years ago, with a report to be published in the coming months.
Buccleuch have been significantly involved in both projects, working with the other partnership organisations; RSPB, Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, Scottish Natural Heritage and Natural England, to make the projects a success.
As a business, Buccleuch continually reviews its assets and the end of the project has given Buccleuch the opportunity to review the moor and what its future should be. Our work to date has led to the conclusion that our most likely course of action is to market the moor for sale.
We have identified an area of 25,000 acres stretching from Auchenrivock in the south to Hartsgarth in the north, which is shown on the map below.
The proposed sale of is a continuation of work we have been undertaking over the last few years, to reduce the footprint of our landholdings. Locally, we have sold a number of farms to tenants, we have sold cottages which we previously let and, more recently, we sold the Evertown Portfolio, a combination of farms, forestry and houses to a number of different buyers.
As part of our decision-making process we would like to know if you have any views on our proposed sale. The majority of the land is currently part of our in-hand farming enterprise however other parts are subject to tenancies. There are also some forestry blocks within the consultation area.
