The project
The Buccleuch Group is in the early stages of considering the potential for a new solar and battery energy storage system (BESS) project near Canonbie, in Dumfries and Galloway.
The new project, known as Hall Burn Renewable Energy Scheme, forms part of The Buccleuch Group’s wider land use strategy for Borders Estate, and will be capable of generating up to 300GWhrs of electricity each year, enough to meet the annual energy demands of up to 20,000 homes.
Solar projects offer the opportunity to use energy generated when it is sunny to convert to electricity, which can be balanced by BESS, which is a technological solution, reserving electric power in batteries, allowing electricity to be exported when demand is high.
The scheme will also compliment Buccleuch’s environmental commitment; and we will work with our specialist consultants and with local and national stakeholders to ensure the scheme is enhanced for biodiversity and to protect wildlife.

Local residents were invited to public information days:
- Monday 8th June 2026 at Evertown Hall, Evertown, Canonbie, DG14 0TJ between 2:00pm and 8:00pm
- Tuesday 16th June 2026 at Canonbie Public Hall, Bowholm, Canonbie, DG14 0UX, between 2:00pm and 8:00pm.
