BUCCLEUCH FAMILY HISTORY
The Buccleuch Family - wholly committed to sustainable countryside & estate management.
Ever since the 15th Century, the Scotts of Buccleuch have played a leading part in the life and development of large parts of the South of Scotland. The countryside estates grew as the result of the Scott's leadership qualities and the need for collective security. Marriage into the Douglases of Drumlanrig family brought the Queensberry Estates into the same ownership. Today the extensive area of mainly hill land is half what it once was, but throughout, the Buccleuch's reputation for enlightened stewardship has been second to none. Today the family are widely acknowledged as champions of estate management & rural development, that sustains local communities.
With countryside estates covering the lowlands of Scotland and in England’s heartland, stretching from Bowhill in the Borders, Queensberry and Langholm in Dumfries and Galloway to the impressive Boughton seat in Northamptonshire and Dalkeith in Midlothian, Buccleuch has developed a reputation for excellence in a world class environment.
Buccleuch is wholly committed to sustainable countryside management and while the essence and heart of the estates remains a working entity, the family is happy to open its lands for all to enjoy while ensuring they remain as beautiful, unspoilt and evocative as possible. Freedom of access has always been a golden rule.
The 9th Duke saw himself as a guardian of his lands, protecting it for future generations.
He said: “I am simply the manager of a piece of countryside in which the most essential ingredient is the people who live in it. The estate is a community which enables us to ensure that the land is sufficiently productive to provide people with a worthwhile living and at the same time present a beautiful environment for the enjoyment of everyone”.
The Buccleuch Group is not just about estate management – over the last decade, its interests have expanded to a global level with interests in Sydney, Australia, Texas and Dallas in the USA.
A total of 700 employees (including 24 apprentices/trainees 90 part-time and 90 seasonal employees) are proud to say they work for the Buccleuch Group.
