Trafalgar Woodland

A living memorial to the Scottish crew members who fought at the battle of Trafalgar was planted in a poignant community ceremony in partnership with the Woodland Trust Scotland,

The 9th Duke of Buccleuch and his family joined former servicemen from the Thornhill area in Dumfries and Galloway for a commemorative planting to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

Around 60 people joined together to each plant a tree in the 10 acres of land next to Langmyre Farm outside Thornhill.

Pupils from Wallacehall, Penpont and Closeburn primary schools, who helped plant the first trees at the start of November, returned to the wood to help plant the last.

The planting took place on land kindly set aside by the 9th Duke of Buccleuch and his family to form the newly created Defiance Woods - named after HMS Defiance, which was captained by Scot, Philip Durham.
