New Walks Leaflet A Step In The Right Direction
New Walks Leaflet A Step In The Right Direction
RANGERS at the Duke of Buccleuch’s Queensberry Estate have used their nature expertise to produce a special walks guide.
The Buccleuch Ranger Service has compiled a colourful leaflet highlighting some of the estate’s best walks.
And the guide has been written with wildlife in mind so walkers can get a chance to see some of the estate’s animal and bird inhabitants, including the endangered red squirrel, along the way.
Graded by distance and fitness levels, the four walks take visitors through some of Dumfries and Galloway’s most beautiful scenery.
Each walk starts at historic Drumlanrig Castle and either loops back around to finish at the castle or the nearby Dovecote Knowe.
Drumlanrig Castle, gardens and the estate are a popular draw with families.
Head ranger Richard Riley said the walks were suitable for people of all abilities.
He said: “The longest walk covers 5km and is also the most strenuous walk we have included in the guide while there is an easy 1.5 km walk that offers an enjoyable introduction to the mixed woodlands at Drumlanrig.
“There really is something on offer for everyone from people looking to tackle a strenuous walk to those just looking for a pleasant stroll.
“The walks are a great way to find out what makes Drumlanrig so special.”
Wildlife visitors may see while enjoying one of the four walks include otters, salmon, kingfishers, herons, little grebe, ducks, warblers and red squirrels.
Places of special interest include the viewing hide where red squirrels go to feed, the beautiful heather houses dotted throughout the gardens and woodlands which were built to provide work during a time of depression and the wildlife garden.
Drumlanrig has a colourful past, some of which is evident from the ancient monuments which can still be seen today.
Throughout the woodlands there are beautiful stone bridges, each a testament to he highly-skilled tradesmen who created them so long ago.
During the Summer of 2004, the Channel Four programme Time Team descended on Drumlanrig to investigate a Roman Camp an dtheir discoveries are still visible.
