Landmark Visitor Attraction Opens For Free

On Wednesday May 16, visitors will be able to visit the historic castle at no cost.

Activities on offer include Land Rover tours, wildlife walks, cycle routes, adventure playground, red squirrel viewing hide and ranger-led activities suitable for all ages.

Keith Campbell from Buccleuch Visitor Services said the opening of the castle to the public for free was a great opportunity to see inside a “very special attraction”.

He said: “Drumlanrig Castle was awarded four stars from the Scottish Tourist Board for a good reason- it really is a great place to visit.

“There is plenty to see and do in a unique and special setting, whatever your age or interest.”

Surrounded by the 120,000 acre Queensberry Estate, Country Park and grand Victorian gardens, Drumlanrig Castle was completed in 1691 by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry and is one of the first and most important renaissance buildings in Scotland.

Steeped in history this unique and historic Scottish Castle, its estate and gardens are one of South Scotland’s major visitor attractions.Entrance to the castle and grounds normally costs adults £7 and children just £4.00. A family ticket for two adults and two children is £19.00.

In April and May a season ticket, which give access to the grounds for two adults and up to 4 children, is available for the special price of £20.00

The Castle is open until August 22 2007.  Group bookings are welcome by appointment both during and out with normal opening times
