Unique Scottish Property Reaches For The Stars

STARGAZERS have a heaven-sent opportunity to snap-up the ultimate in astronomy accessories – their very own observatory.

The self-contained observatory at Earlyburn in the Borders sits nestled in the hills overlooking some of Scotland’s finest countryside.

And budding Sir Patrick Moores can get starry-eyed at the thought of owning their very own private gateway to the skies.

Earlyburn, near the Borders village of Eddleston, was operated by the Astronomical Society of Edinburgh.

Based at the Royal Observatory in Edinburgh, Society members regularly travelled to Earlyburn after the site was leased to them.

Acclaimed by astronomers as an ideal darksite, the observatory at Earlyburn was renowned for its clear views of the night skies.

The site allowed more serious observations of deep sky objects away from light polluted cities and towns.
Now the unique location, spanning 2.86 acres, is up for sale through the Borders biggest chartered surveyors, Buccleuch John Sale.

The site, on the market for offers over £95,000, offers a superb building plot above the charming rural village of Eddleston with planning consent approved for one house.

As Britain’s most famous amateur astronomer, Sir Patrick has a private observatory in the Midlands named after him.

Buccleuch John Sale Director Harry Lukas, who is overseeing the sale of Earlyburn said such a sale was rare.

He said: “This is an unique site in an outstanding position south of  Edinburgh  and it’s historic use may widen its attraction”

With a good primary school, a hotel and restaurant, Eddleston is just four miles from the picturesque town of Peebles and an easy commute of 18 miles from Edinburgh.

Owned by The Natural Environment Research Council, Earlyburn offers sweeping panoramic views over the valley.

Its enviable rural location makes it a sought-after site with extensive grounds available to create a garden and paddock.

The sale also includes the former shelter used by the Society.

Buccleuch John Sale was created when the Buccleuch Group acquired the John Sale estate agency practice and their team of experienced chartered surveyors and other property professionals.

Buccleuch John Sale complements and works closely with with the Group’s other estate agency Buccleuch Town & Country which is based in Edinburgh and land and farming specialists Buccleuch FBR in Kelso.
