Global Scots homecoming to head up Buccleuch

John Glen has been appointed from 3rd November as the new Chief Executive of Buccleuch Group. He succeeds Michael Clarke who is retiring after 19 years with the Scottish based property and land management business.

John is a Scot and a graduate of Edinburgh University who has returned recently to Edinburgh following a long and varied career with both Unilever and Air Liquide. He has had extensive experience across a number of sectors including household products and foods, working in the UK, Germany and the US. Most recently and for the last eight years he has been based in Paris as Chief Financial Officer of Air Liquide which is the world leader in industrial gases.

Announcing the appointment the Duke said “I am delighted to welcome John who is taking the helm at a time of unprecedented economic turmoil. As an economist and with a depth of financial experience he is bringing to Buccleuch a set of analytical and business skills that make him well equipped to lead us forward.”

John says that “I am relishing the challenges and opportunities that working with Buccleuch will present over the coming months and years. The Group has an interesting mix of trading, professional services and property management and investment activities within the UK and overseas.”

“I am joining the business at an interesting time. The Scottish Government has a set an agenda for the future role of land in issues like food and energy security and it is clear that multi land uses have a major role to play in a mixed economy. My challenge is going to be in optimising the sustainable use of land resources balanced with activity across our other sectors.”

“For a business with property at its core the current economic turbulence has created pressures, but I am confident that Buccleuch has the strength and will develop the flexibility to respond in time to the opportunities that will undoubtedly emerge.”

John will be based at the Buccleuch Head Office in Edinburgh.
