SCHOOL children across the Borders and Dumfries and Galloway have been getting creative as entries piled in for a colourful competition to help their school go green.

Property experts Buccleuch John Sale New Homes have been asking budding artists at primary schools across the south to design a poster showing an environmentally friendly home of the future.

Buccleuch John Sale are delighted to announce today, Thursday 12 June 2008, the winner of this competition which attracted entries from 16 schools including small rural ones like Caddonfoot to large Dumfries primary’s like Calside.

Laura Milliken a Primary 5 pupil from Calside Primary School in Dumfries is the Green Key Homes competition winner.

Laura has won a bang up to date lap top computer and design package for her classmates and school and a great short break holiday for her to enjoy with her family at Centre Parcs.

Laura also won a great day at Drumlanrig Castle for herself and her classmates.

The prizes will be presented to Laura and her school at Drumlanrig Castle at 11.30hrs on Thursday 12 June 2008.

Flora Howie the Head Teacher at Calside Primary said “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the ECO House competition.  It helped to raise their awareness of green issues and gave them the opportunity to develop their creative ideas. I feel it inspired their imagination and I am really proud of their efforts.  As a school we are delighted that Laura has actually won.”

New Homes sales manager Anne Mitchell based in Galashiels said she was overwhelmed by the number of children and schools which had taken part in the competition. The Buccleuch John Sale office was flooded with entries.

She said: “No one can underestimate the part we all have to play in helping shape our environmental future and what better place to start than with the next generation.

“Buccleuch John Sale New Homes are helping do their bit for the environment by planting trees to help offset carbon emissions in every new home we sell but we want to do more.

“We want to encourage youngsters to play a part too and it is clear from this competition that our children really do care about the environment and think hard about what we all can do to help it.”

Anne said that “Laura has a great imagination and showed some real innovation in sketching out her ideas for a green home of the future. She even had a device that harnesses the power of snoring to warm the electric blanket.”

“Perhaps Laura has a future as an architect?”
