Duke Helps Locals Make Most of Borders Attraction

THE Duke of Buccleuch is set to help locals make the most of one of the Borders biggest tourist attractions.

Bowhill Country Park will open for the new season on Saturday (April 1).

And in a bid to encourage people living near-by to enjoy the park, visitors living in the TD7 postcode area can get in for half price.

Bowhill House Manager Trish Gray said the move was to help encourage local people to visit the historic park.

She said: “This year, people who can prove they live in the TD7 postcode area will be let in for a reduced fee of £1.50 per person and under 5s are free.

“The normal charge for the country park this year is £3 for adults and £2 for children.

“Families are particularly welcome at Bowhill, and our events programme is especially busy during the school holidays.

“We want families to join us for an Easter Fun day in the countryside park with the Ranger – dare to be different and come and work for your chocolate egg with a nature-based treasure hunt!”

The country park is set to open as the on-going building restoration programme at Bowhill House enters the final stages

And although scaffolding will be up in the courtyard while the famous Bowhill Theatre is repaired, disruption to visitors will be kept to a minimum.

Vital restoration works will help safeguard the future of Bowhill for generations to come.

Trish Gray said “In April the courtyard will be partially taken over by scaffolding and it will be noisy at times.

“The result however will be a fantastic new bar and foyer area which can also be used for small exhibitions and receptions.

“The Victorian kitchen will not be open until July because of the works going on in the foyer area but there will still be plenty to do and see.”

Bowhill Country Park will be open from 1-17th April and then on weekends and Bank holidays in May and June from 10am to 5pm.

Special events on offer include a special family tour of Bowhill House on April 29 and an exhibition about the life of James Hogg; the Ettrick Shepherd.
