Long Service Awards For Loyal Employees

The Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch presented 6 employees with the special awards at a ceremony at Bowhill House.

And for one recipient, it was a case of following in his father’s footsteps.

Scott Patterson, financial controller for Bowhill Estate started work as a trainee estate clerk in June 1975.

Receiving his award for 32 years service, Mr Patterson revealed his father, John, had also been presented with an award from the current Duke’s father, also for 32 years service.

He said: “My father was a farm worker at Tushielaw Farm and was given a certificate from the 8th Duke of Buccleuch in September 1972 at the Yarrow Show.

“It meant a lot to him and it means a lot to me.  It’s nice to have the work we do recognised in this way.  I have always enjoyed my job, if you don’t enjoy a job you don’t stay”.

“It’s a great place to work, I grew up on a farm and working at Bowhill means I still get to enjoy the countryside; my roots are in the valley and I hope to be here for 40 years.”

Colleague Mike McGrath, who has been with the estate for 32 years said the variety of the job had helped make it special.

Mr McGrath, company secretary, said when he had started as an office clerk, the nature of the job had been different.

“Throughout the 30 years, no day has ever been the same and that makes the job one I’m proud to do.”

Bowhill Estate manager Stephen Vickers said the presentations had been a great way to mark such an important milestone.

He said: “The family and the estate are proud to recognise and celebrate such longevity of service.

“So many years of service says a lot about the loyalty of the people who work here; their efforts are very much appreciated.”

The loyal service award recipients were: Sandy Cumming, garage manager, Tom McColm, shepherd, John McDonald, stockman, Mike McGrath, company secretary, Scott Patterson, financial controller and Jimmy Young, lorry driver.
